Khajur Imli Chutney, also known as Date Tamarind Chutney or Meetha Chutney for Chaats, is a sweet and tangy condiment that adds a burst of flavor to a variety of Indian street foods. This chutney is made from a perfect blend of dates (khajur), tamarind (imli), and jaggery (gur) — ingredients that bring together sweetness, tanginess, and depth of flavor. A touch of red chilli powder, asafoetida (hing), and salt gives it a mild spiciness and balance. It’s an indispensable component of most chaats like bhel puri, pani puri, sev puri, samosa chaat, and dahi vada, transforming them into irresistible delicacies with its deliciously contrasting taste.

To make this khajur imli ki chutney recipe, start by cleaning and washing 1 cup of deseeded dates and 2 tablespoons of deseeded tamarind. Combine them with ½ cup grated jaggery, 1 teaspoon red chilli powder, a pinch of hing, salt to taste, and 1½ cups of water in a saucepan. Simmer the mixture on a medium flame for about 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens and all the flavors blend well. Once slightly cooled, blend the mixture into a smooth paste and strain it using a sieve for a silky texture. The result is a glossy, rich sweet tamarind chutney that can be stored and enjoyed with various dishes.

This meetha chutney for chaats is not only simple to make but also full of nostalgia for many Indian households. Traditionally, it’s prepared by slow-cooking dates and tamarind with jaggery — a method that enhances both the taste and shelf life. You can even prepare it in a pressure cooker to save time. Once made, it stays good for up to a month in the refrigerator and can be deep frozen for 6 months or more. The natural sweetness of dates and jaggery makes it a healthier alternative to sugar-laden sauces, while tamarind provides a natural tanginess that excites the palate.

In India, khajur imli chutney is used widely across regional cuisines. From Mumbai’s famous chaats to Delhi’s golgappas, from Rajasthan’s kachoris to Gujarati farsan platters, this chutney adds the signature sweet-tangy twist. It’s also served as a dip with samosas, pakoras, and kebabs, and is an essential part of festive or street-style snacks. Some people even drizzle it over parathas or dahi bhalla, showcasing its versatility. The blend of dates, tamarind, and jaggery not only tastes amazing but also aids digestion, making it a flavorful and functional condiment.

For diabetics, heart patients, and those aiming for weight loss, this khajur imli chutney can be enjoyed in small quantities. While dates and jaggery are natural sweeteners and healthier than refined sugar, they still contain calories and natural sugars that can affect blood sugar levels. Consuming 1–2 teaspoons occasionally is generally safe, especially when paired with fiber-rich foods like chaats that include sprouts or vegetables. The tamarind and dates also offer minerals like potassium and magnesium, which are good for the heart, but portion control remains key for managing glucose and weight.

Overall, sweet tamarind chutney is a delightful, homemade condiment that brings authentic Indian flavor to any meal. Its combination of sweet, tangy, and mildly spicy notes enhances any snack or chaat it touches. Whether you’re serving bhel puri to guests, adding it to tikki chaat, or using it as a dip for pakoras, this chutney elevates the dish instantly. In moderation, it’s a wonderful addition even for health-conscious individuals, offering both taste and tradition in every spoonful.
