homemade pizza sauce is a classic Italian recipe . This is a blend of harmonious flavors of ripe tomatoes with onion, peppercorns and oregano.

I often make large quantities of this indian pizza sauce when tomatoes are in season and freeze it in an air-tight container. That way I am always ready to serve Pizzas in a hurry all year round.

Nothing to beat homemade pizza sauce with fresh tomatoes as we use the freshest ingredients in the recipe with zero preservatives compared to processed bottled pizza sauce. Even better, we use very little sugar and the ripest of tomatoes to make homemade pizza sauce.

You can use this homemade pizza sauce with fresh tomatoes recipe for a pasta sauce. Dilute the sauce using water and add 2 tablespoons fresh cream to mellow the sauce a little and toss cooked pasta in it. You can add your favourite herbs too, like a few leaves of basil.

We have used this homemade pizza sauce in recipes like Veg Stuffed Cheesy Pizza Balls, Hariyali Paneer Potato Pancake, Mexican Tomato and Bean Hakka Noodles, Italian Sizzler, Pizza Burgers and many more.

How to make Homemade Pizza Sauce

    1. For the Homemade Pizza Sauce (Indian style pizza sauce), clean, wash and remove the eyes of the tomatoes. You do not want them in your pizza sauce.
    2. Make a criss-cross on the base of each tomato using a sharp knife. Make sure you use tomatoes that are firm and red in colour.
    3. Meanwhile, keep the water for boiling in a deep pan.
    4. Place the tomatoes in boiling water for 2 to 3 minutes or till the skin begins to peel.
    5. Drain the tomatoes using a strainer.
    6. Cool slightly and peel, they will peel easily because of the criss cross that was made at the base of the tomatoes as the skin will come off the flesh.
    7. Cut them into 2 and deseed them using a sharp knife. Removing the seeds not only ensures a smooth puree, but also ensures that the sourness of the tomatoes reduces.
    8. Roughly chop them. Size doesn't matter as they are anyway going to be blended.
    9. Transfer the chopped tomatoes to a blender.
    10. Blend in a mixer till smooth. Use a big mixer jar and not the small one as when you will blend it will overflow. Keep aside.
    11. In a broad non-stick pan, heat the olive oil. Olive oil is used in all Italian recipes as it taste really great. Add the garlic. You can also use the paste if you have it ready but finely chopped always gives a better taste and good mouthfeel. If you are jain, you can learn how to make Jain Pizza Sauce.
    12. Sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.
    13. Add the onions. These give a really nice flavor to the Homemade Pizza Sauce.
    14. Sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
    15. Add the prepared tomato pulp.
    16. Add the oregano. If you wish you can also add mixed herbs.
    17. Add the chilli flakes for a spicy kick.
    18. Add the tomato ketchup. This gives a little colour and sweetness to the sauce.
    19. Add the chilli powder and salt. Chilli powder is added to give more colour and spiceness.
    20. Mix the pizza sauce well and cook on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes stir it in between. Make sure you are careful of the spluttering that happens of the tomatoes.
    21. Add the sugar to the pizza sauce and mix well.
    22. Cook the homemade pizza sauce with fresh tomatoes on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
    23. Store the Homemade Pizza Sauce (Indian style pizza sauce) in an air- tight container and use as required. Stays fresh in the fridge for 4 days and freezer for atleast 3 months.
Tips for homemade pizza sauce

    1. Remember that the criss-cross cut has to be made on the opposite side of the eyes of the tomatoes.

    2. Also make the cut less than half way through the tomatoes. If the cut is too deep, the tomato might open up while blanching.

    3. The pan in which water is kept for boiling has to be big and deep enough, so the tomatoes can immerse in the water completely.

    4. Before you add the tomatoes to the water, ensure that the water is completely reached its boiling point. This is because we have to blanch the tomatoes and not cook them.

    5. Use a small spoon to remove the seeds so there is minimum wastage.

    6. Use a big mixer jar and not the small one as when you will blend it will overflow.

    7. Oregano can be replaced with dried mixed herbs.

    8. You can use this pizza sauce immediately or in an air- tight container and use as required. Stays fresh in the fridge for 4 days and freezer for atleast 3 months.

What is the difference between tomato puree and tomato pulp?

user
Tarla Dalal

March 13, 2025, midnight

Hi Bela, tomato pulp is generally fresh, made by blanching the tomatoes, removing the skin and then blending it. Tomato puree is a sauce like consistency, which also comes ready made in the market.

Is it ok to use corn (maize) oil instead of olive oil?

user

Hi Liza, Italian food always taste better with Olive oil. Also its far healthier than corn oil as it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.

Thank you for this recipe! It was excellent! The flavour was robust and the sauce was well seasoned. It was easy to prepare. I used Italian seasoning because that was what I had on hand, and I simmered mine for about ten minutes to thicken it up. I will never use that canned stuff again!
