Moong and toovar dal are boiled together and then cooked with a wonderful fresh paste of coriander, coconut, ginger, chillies and garlic. Your family will relish the different taste of Green Dal Fry.

This spicy Green Dal Fry is pressure cooked and then cooked along with yummy green paste in a pan.

You can make this Green Masala Toovar and Moong Dal Fry in advance in the morning and store it an airtight container in the fridge. Serve it in the evening. Just before serving, reheat the Green Dal Fry and add hot water to adjust the consistency as it thickens over time.

Serve Green Dal Fry with Steamed Rice or Jeera Rice.

For the green paste
  1. Combine all the ingredients and grind in a mixer to a coarse paste adding a little water if required. Keep aside.
How to proceed to make green dal fry
  1. To make the green dal fry, clean, wash and soak the dals in enough water for about 30 to 45 minutes. Drain well.
  2. Combine the soaked dals, 1 cup of water, salt, turmeric powder, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  3. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
  4. Heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan, add the prepared green paste and sauté on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes.
  5. Add the prepared cooked dal, 3/4 cup of hot water and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve the green dal fry hot.

    1. To make green dal fry, we will first make a lush green paste. For that clean and wash a bunch of coriander.
    2. Roughly chop it and measure a cup.
    3. Transfer the roughly chopped coriander to a mixer jar.
    4. Add thinly sliced onions.
    5. Add freshly grated coconut. You can keep the brown skin intact or remove it before grating.
    6. Add green chillies.
    7. Add ginger. If you do not have fresh adrak mirch then add ginger-green chillies paste.
    8. Add garlic.
    9. Add the lemon juice. This helps in maintaining the bright green colour of the paste.
    10. Add approx. 5 tbsp water
    11. Grind to a coarse paste. Keep aside.

    2. Add the yellow moong dal.
    3. Clean and wash the toovar and arhar dal. You can use a combination of other dal like moong or chana dal too.

    6. Drain well using a strainer.
    7. Take a pressure cooker, add the soaked dals.
    8. Add 1 cup of water.
    9. Add salt.
    10. Add the turmeric powder.
    11. Mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Allow the steam to escape naturally before opening the lid. Mix the dals once and keep aside.
    12. Heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan. Ghee or butter can be used as a substitute.
    13. Add the prepared green paste.
    14. Sauté on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes or till the green paste is cooked well.
    15. Add the prepared cooked dal.
    16. Add 3/4 cup of hot water.
    17. Add salt. Add more or less water as per the consistency you would like. The salt has been added while cooking the dal too, so be cautious while adding salt at this stage.
    18. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
