Why Porridge for Babies?

  1. Babies who have started weaning love to lick porridge. It is a smooth and soft textured purée. Weaning is an experimentation time for babies – in terms of flavours, textures and colours. The base of most porridge is a flour, which serves as a source of energy and nutrients like fiber, calcium, iron etc. for your tiny growing tots. The flour is sautéed in ghee usually. This too serves as a source of energy. Moreover it helps in bone development, brain development, nourishes the skin and aids in digestion too. All you need to remember is to not add sugar to the porridge, as this habit of sweet tooth stays with them lifelong then.

For Jowar Porridge for Babies

  1. For Jowar Porridge for Babies, first choose good quality dates. Select those that are smooth-skinned, glossy and plump. Avoid dates that are broken, cracked, dried, shriveled or sour-smelling. They are available with or without seeds, choose as per your convenience.
  2. If you have bought dates with seeds, deseed them first and discard the seeds. You may even chop the date at this stage before soaking.
  3. Place them in a small bowl.
  4. Add 2 tbsp of warm water to it.
  5. Cover with a lid and allow them to soak for 10 minutes. This step is important to make the next step viz. blending easier.
  6. After soaking, transfer the dates along with water in a mixer jar.
  7. Blend in a mixer till really smooth. Ensure that no pieces of dates remain behind, as that might lead to choking in babies. Keep this dates puree aside.
  8. Now, take a small non-stick pan. Add ghee to it, switch on the flame and allow the ghee to heat.
  9. As the ghee melts, add jowar flour to it.
  10. Cook it on a medium flame for 2 minutes. Do not cook on high flame, else the mixture will burn. Keep stirring it continuously with a wooden ladle.
  11. As the colour of the jowar flour changes to light brown, add the prepared dates puree. The pleasant aroma of the jowar flour upon roasting is an indication that the flour has been cooked well.
  12. Add ¾ cup of water. Adjust the quantity of water to get the porridge consistency. The amount of water may be a tbsp more or less depending on the quality of the flour.
  13. Mix well using a whisk immediately.
  14. Cook Sorghum Porridge for Babies on a medium flame for 1 minute. Keep stirring it continuously, else it might turn lumpy. The mixture when cooked well will leave the sides of the pan.
  15. Cool Jowar Porridge for Babies ( Sorghum Porridge for Babies) slightly and serve lukewarm to your little one.
  16. Always begin with a small quantity and increase the feed serving size gradually. Once your baby has got accustomed to Jowar Porridge for Babies, try its variation viz. Jowar Ragi and Date Porridge for Babies.

Simple, quick jowar porridge for the little toddler. My nephew enjoys this porridge and keeps his stomach full for a longer time.
