Mumbai’s favourite street food merges with Oriental culture, in this exciting version of Chinese bhel. Rather than being made with puffed rice, this unique Chinese bhel recipe is made with fried noodles, tossed with colourful sautéed veggies and garnished with crunchy spring onions making it a veg Chinese bhel.

A generous dose of sauces is also added to bind the Indian style Chinese bhel together in a tangy way! Prepare this Chinese bhel snack just before serving, as the fried noodles tends to get soggy over time.

Indian style Chinese bhel is made of fried noodles, perked up with crunchy veggies like cabbage, carrots, capsicum and spring onions along with splashes of tongue-tickling schezwan sauce and tomato ketchup. This Chinese bhel recipe is not a street-style recipe, it is a variation to the Mumbai street style Chinese bhel. The delicious flavors of Chinese cuisine are very well adapted by Indians and fusion recipes are invented! This is one of the Indo-Chinese dish that is my personal favourite and I make Indian style Chinese bhel as an evening snack for my family!!

For chinese bhel
 

  1. To make chinese bhel, heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan or a wok, add the garlic and sauté on a high flame for a few seconds.
  2. Add the spring onions whites and greens, capsicum, carrots and cabbage and sauté on a high flame for 30 seconds.
  3. Add the schezuan sauce, tomato ketchup and salt, mix well and cook on a high flame for a few seconds.
  4. Remove from the flame and transfer it into a deep bowl.
  5. Add the fried noodles and toss well.
  6. Serve the chinese bhel immediately garnished with spring onion whites and greens.

How to make Chinese Bhel

 

    1. To make Mumbai street style Chinese bhel, heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan or a wok. 
    2. Once the oil is hot, add garlic and sauté on a high flame for a few seconds.
    3. Add spring onion whites and greens.
    4. Add capsicum.
    5. Add carrots.
    6. Add cabbage.
    7. Sauté on a high flame for 30 seconds.
    8. Add schezuan sauce as per the spice level you prefer.
    9. Add tomato ketchup. Learn how to make tomato ketchup at home and make it time ahead and store it in refrigerator. 
    10. Add salt. Fried noodles, ketchup, schezuan sauce already consists of a little salt so add accordingly.
    11. Mix well and cook on a high flame for a few seconds. I personally love the raw texture of vegetables and do not prefer sauteeing them. You can check out this roadside chinese bhel to make it that way.
    12. Remove from the flame and transfer it into a deep bowl.
    13. Add fried noodles.

I think it needs a little tamarind or may be some viniger With Chinese menu it goes very well for the Indian palate

Hi Madhulika, Chinese Bhel has a sweet and spicy taste, so we have used tomato ketchup and schezuan sauce for it. Vinegar or tamrind will make it sour so we have not used it in the recipe. Though if you wish to add some tanginess to it, you can add little lemon juice or vinegar. Do try this recipe and share your review with us. Happy Cooking!
