Elaichi Chai is a very famous hot beverage originated from India. Rainy or winter days, it is a go to beverage. It is one of the favourite drinks among Indians. The day starts with a cup of chai or coffee and feels incomplete without it. Indian cardamom tea orelaichi chaa is a popular beverage made using a handful of aromatic ingredients. The quantity of all the ingredients varies from person to person. Every household has their own style of making elaichi wali chai.

As the name suggests, elaichai chai or cardamom tea literally translates to cardamom flavoured tea. The flavor of the tea is very powerful, it is basically made by brewing black tea leaves with cardamom.

We have made cardamom tea by combining water, tea powder, sugar and crushed cardamom and boiled it together. The colour and flavour of the elaichi chai will largely depend upon the strength of tea powder so, always make use of good quality tea powder or tea leaves. Once it is boiled, we have added milk to it and boiled for 3-4 minutes. You can add milk according to your preference depending on how you like your cardamom tea. Strain and serve hot.

If you start walking around the streets of India, you will see a chaiwala around every corner selling tea with biscuits or cream rolls. Be it day or night. Late nights, the chai wala’s are seen selling tea (also elaichi tea) on their cycles. Tea is one of the very famous beverage and people usually start their day with tea and some breakfast.

For elaichi tea
 

  1. Combine 1 cup of water, tea powder, sugar and cardamom, mix well and boil on a medium flame for 3 minutes.
  2. Add the milk, mix well and boil on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  3. Serve elaichi chai immediately.

How to make Elaichi Tea

 

    1. To prepare elaichi tea recipe | Indian cardamom tea | elaichi chaa | elaichi wali chai | in a saucepan or deep-pan add 1 cup of water. 
    2. Add tea powder. The colour of the elaichi tea | Indian cardamom tea | elaichi chaa | elaichi wali chai | will largely depend upon the strength of tea leaves so, always make use of good quality tea powder or tea leaves. 
    3. Add sugar. Sugar can be swapped with powdered jaggery. To enhance the flavour of your cup of elaichi tea, you can also add green tea leaves or ginger root.
    4. Add cardamom. We have coarsely crushed the elaichi in a mortar pestle and kept the peel intact before adding. 
    5. Mix well and boil the tea.
    6. Simmer on a medium flame for 3 minutes or until the color of the water changes to a yellowish hue. You can increase or decrease the time of simmering, depending upon how strong you prefer the tea. If you prefer a strong version, increase the simmering time, and check the color.
    7. Add the milk. Vegans can make use of almond milk or soy milk whereas health-conscious people can make use of low-fat milk. Some people prefer a milky tea, while some like less milk, so add more or less milk as per your liking.
    8. Mix well and boil on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
    9. Strain immediately using a strainer and discard the tea powder mixture.
    10. Serve elaichi tea | Indian cardamom tea | elaichi chaa | elaichi wali chai | immediately.

I am so proud of myself that it turns out perfectly at my first attempt at chai, just now. It is better than the shop. My kids drank them all up immediately leaving me about 1/4 cup for tasting after much begging. Lol! Thank you for this recipe. Chai making is easier than I thought . 1 am morning.
