For palak masoor dal for babies and toddlers- Combine the masoor dal and ¾ cup of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
- Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid. Keep aside.
- Heat the ghee in a deep non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds and asafoetida.
- When the seeds crackle, add the onions and ginger-garlic paste and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds.
- Add the spinach, turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute, while stirring occasionally.
- Add the cooked dal and mash well with a potato masher. Add ¼ cup of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
- Serve the palak masoor dal for babies and toddlers lukewarm.

Finely chop the spinach leaves with the help of a sharp sterilized knife. Keep aside.

Add 3/4 cup of water to it.

Close the lid of the pressure cooker and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Let the steam escape completely before opening the lid of the pressure cooker.

Add the onions. Ensure that the onions are very finely chopped. If your baby has not been accustomed to strong flavours like those of onions, then you can avoid it completely.

Add the ginger-garlic paste. Again this also lends an amazing flavour to the dal, but if you want you can avoid it.

Saute on a medium flame slightly, about 30 seconds.

Add finely chopped spinach to it.

Now add some spice. First add the turmeric powder. This serves the purpose of colour as well as exhibit anti-microbial action.

Then add chilli powder. Both these spice powders are just about a pinch, to start exposing babies to their taste and flavour. You can take your call on wether to add chilli powder or no.

Finally add restricted quantity of salt. If your baby is below 1 year, prefer avoiding it. This is because most pediatricians these days don’t recommend the use of salt in a child’s diet below 1 year. The best is to consult your pediatrician. S(he) is your baby’s best guide.

Mix well using a ladle and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute. Keep stirring it occasionally so that the Palak Masoor Dal for Babies and Toddler doesn’t stick to the bottom the pan.
