Jaundice is the disease caused by the inflammation of the liver or due to the the obstruction of the bile ducts leading to the discharge of pigment named bilirubin is seen in the blood. Becasue of its yellow colour, it imparts a yellow colour to the skin.

Symptoms of Jaundice
A person suffering from jaundice would showcase some or all the following symptoms:
- Yellow skin
- Yellowness in the eyes
- Nausea and sometimes vomiting
- Fatigue
- Urine dark yellow in colour than normal
- Pain in abdomen
Diet for Jaundice
A healthy diet plays a big role in recovery from Jaundice. You need to eat to support your liver and help overcome the infection. Your doctor or dietitian will give you a recommended dietary plan depending on the severity of the disease, but there are some foods which are recommended in general.
You need to begin with clear liquid diet with fruits and vegetables and gradually add other whole grains and dals to make a soft diet. The idea is to give small and frequent meals every 2 to 3 hours.
1. Begin with juices in the initial stages of the disease. Have strained juices followed by unstrained juices after 2 to 3 days. Prefer lemon, papaya, pineapple, orange, grapefruit and melons. Learn how to make Orange Juice at home is 3 ways.
2. Have plenty of water. Staying hydrated is very important for the functioning of all organs of the body, including liver. Try flavouring the water by way of Watermelon Mint and Ginger Infused Water, if you have the feeling of nausea and cannot handle plain water.

3. You can also try Strained Toovar Dal water to begin with. Gradually add cooked dals like Moong Dal Water to your meals. The idea is to restrict the amount of protein and let your liver rest.

4. Indian Soups are equally healthy. But to begin with try plain vegetable soups and avoid the addition of fat and milk. A simple Carrot Soup to Potato and Vegetable Soup can be opted for gradually as you recover. This is a good source of energy as well as antioxidants needed to recover.

5. You can completely rely on a coconut water daily. It is a very nourishing addition to your meals. Coconut water can be sipped on in-between meals. It maintains electrolyte and water balance.

6. Reach out for Herbal Tea as a substitute to sugar and milk laden tea and coffee. Herbal Tea like Fresh Mint and Lemon Tea are known to reduce inflammation of the liver.
7. Include other fruits like strawberries, black grapes, carrots, beets and tomatoes too. Once the yellowness has reduced and your doctor has added curd to your diet, you can combine the probiotic curd and have a Strawberry Oatmeal Curd Smoothie. This has no sugar, but little honey for sweetness. Honey has been added as it helps overcome inflammation.

8. Once you have recovered slightly and are ready for soft foods, opt for soft rotis, sabzis and khichdi. Oats Roti is a healthy Indian recipe which is a good source of energy and protein, needed for Jaundice recovery.
9. Slowly introduce rice too then. Begin with simple Rice Porridge. It is very light for the stomach to digest.

10. Choose other healthy grains like buckwheat, barley, jowar etc. over maida and its products like bread and pasta. As a soft food option you can combine them with rice and try Vegetable Dalia Khichdi. It is a mildly spiced suitable for you.
11. In the recovery stage, do not miss out on proteins. They are needed for repair and regeneration of the liver cells. Have dals but minus the fat and excess masalas. A classic Indian Recipe for Jaundice is Suva Masoor Dal.

The tempering of cumin seeds aids in digestion, greens like suva add in antioxidants and dal provides protein. In all, it is a nutri-dense recipe. Serve it with soft chapati.
12. Finally, when you can chew, add a handful of nuts like almonds and walnuts to your diet. They are rich in omega-3 fats and help to reduce inflammation in the body. The protein in them nourishes cells and tissues as well. Munch on them or make some Date and Walnut Balls.

7 Foods to Avoid during Jaundice
1. Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol will damage your liver further.

2. Fried Foods: These are difficult to digest. These put extra load on liver for metabolism.

3. Refiner Sugar and Carbs: sugar and maida should be avoided in jaundice as they provide unnecessary calories and no nutrition.

4. Excessive Salt: This may lead to liver and kidney damage. Use it in restrictive amounts.

5. Canned Foods: These have excess salt too, used as a preservative.
6. Readymade Fruit Juices: These are loaded with sugar.
7. Red Meat: It has excess fat.
Rest well, stay away from alcohol, carbonated beverages, processed foods, canned foods, spicy foods and oily foods. Wish you a quick recovery!
