Jaundice is the disease caused by the inflammation of the liver or due to the the obstruction of the bile ducts leading to the discharge of pigment named bilirubin is seen in the blood. Becasue of its yellow colour, it imparts a yellow colour to the skin.

Symptoms of Jaundice

A person suffering from jaundice would showcase some or all the following symptoms:

  • Yellow skin
  • Yellowness in the eyes
  • Nausea and sometimes vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Urine dark yellow in colour than normal
  • Pain in abdomen

Diet for Jaundice

A healthy diet plays a big role in recovery from Jaundice. You need to eat to support your liver and help overcome the infection. Your doctor or dietitian will give you a recommended dietary plan depending on the severity of the disease, but there are some foods which are recommended in general.

You need to begin with clear liquid diet with fruits and vegetables and gradually add other whole grains and dals to make a soft diet. The idea is to give small and frequent meals every 2 to 3 hours.

1. Begin with juices in the initial stages of the disease. Have strained juices followed by unstrained juices after 2 to 3 days. Prefer lemon, papaya, pineapple, orange, grapefruit and melons. Learn how to make Orange Juice at home is 3 ways.

2. Have plenty of water. Staying hydrated is very important for the functioning of all organs of the body, including liver. Try flavouring the water by way of Watermelon Mint and Ginger Infused Water, if you have the feeling of nausea and cannot handle plain water.

3. You can also try Strained Toovar Dal water to begin with. Gradually add cooked dals like Moong Dal Water to your meals. The idea is to restrict the amount of protein and let your liver rest.

4. Indian Soups are equally healthy. But to begin with try plain vegetable soups and avoid the addition of fat and milk. A simple Carrot Soup to Potato and Vegetable Soup can be opted for gradually as you recover. This is a good source of energy as well as antioxidants needed to recover.

7. Include other fruits like strawberries, black grapes, carrots, beets and tomatoes too. 10. Choose other healthy grains like buckwheat, barley, jowar etc. over maida and its products like bread and pasta. As a soft food option you can combine them with rice and try Vegetable Dalia Khichdi. It is a mildly spiced suitable for you.

3. Refiner Sugar and Carbs: sugar and maida should be avoided in jaundice as they provide unnecessary calories and no nutrition.
