A wholesome and tasty snack, which can be served for breakfast too, the Chola Methi Dhokla is a real gem from Indian cuisine.

It is healthy and filling, and has an awesome flavour thanks to the magic of fenugreek leaves.

At the same time, it is also quite easy to make, so it can be made quickly for breakfast if you make the batter the previous night itself and keep it ready.

Chola Methi Dhokla recipe - How to make Chola Methi Dhokla

Soaking time:  8 hours   Preparation Time:    Cooking Time:    Total Time:     2Makes 2 servings

Ingredients
1/2 cup chola dal (split cow peas)
1/4 cup finely chopped fenugreek (methi) leaves
1/2 tsp green chilli paste
salt to taste
1 tsp fruit salt

    Method
  1. Combine the chola dal and enough water in a deep bowl for 8 hours and drain well.
  2. Blend in a mixer along with ½ cup of water till smooth.
  3. Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl, add all the ingredients, except the fruit salt and mix well.
  4. Just before steaming the dhoklas, add the fruit salt and 2 tsp of water and mix gently.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 175 mm. (7”) diameter thali and shake the thali clockwise to spread it evenly and steam in a steamer for 12 minutes or till the dhoklas are cooked.
  6. Cut into square or diamond shaped equal pieces using a sharp knife.
  7. Serve immediately with green chutney.

  1. First clean the chola dal and remove any kind of stone or dirt.  Put 1/2 cup chola dal (split cow peas) into a bowl. 
  2. Put chola dal in a glass bowl and add enough water to soak. 
     
  3. Cover and keep aside to soak for 8 hours or overnight.  
  4. Next day, wash and then drain out the water using a strainer.

  14. Steam in a steamer for 12 minutes or till the dhoklas are cooked.
  15. Cut into square or diamond shaped equal pieces using a sharp knife.

  17. Serve chola methi dhokla | Gujarati chola dhokla | healthy chola methi dhokla |  immediately with green chutney.

    Was tired of the basic white and khaman dhokla so, tried this wholesome chola methi dhokla. They taste superb!!

    i followed the recipe step by step... but it has turned out to be like khichdi but not dhokla.... dnt know what went wrong

    Easy recipe. I modified it and made dhoklas right after grinding the dal. Only added soda, did not add baking powder. You can also add spinach or cilantro in place of methi or add all 3 greens to make it more healthy.
