Chola dal is an excellent source of potassium and also rich in soluble fiber which helps to eliminate cholesterol from the body, thus protecting the heart. It is also a good source of folate, copper, phosphorous, iron, calcium and manganese. It is certainly a source of protein like most other dals. This helps to nourish cells of the body and also add a satiety value to meals. Thus it makes a wonderful choice for weight watchers and athletes. The protein is also a source of nutrition for a healthy skin and shiny hair.

First clean the chola dal and remove any kind of stone or dirt. Put 1/2 cup chola dal (split cow peas) into a bowl.

Put chola dal in a glass bowl and add enough water to soak.

Cover and keep aside to soak for 8 hours or overnight.

Next day, wash and then drain out the water using a strainer.

To make chola methi dhokla recipe | Gujarati chola dhokla | healthy chola methi dhokla | in a mixer, put the soaked and drained chola dal.

Add ½ cup of water.

Blend till smooth.

Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl.

Add 1/4 cup finely chopped fenugreek (methi) leaves.

Add 1/2 tsp green chilli paste.

Add salt to taste. We added 1/2 tsp salt.

Mix well.

Just before steaming the dhoklas, add the fruit salt.

Add 2 tsp of water over fruit salt.

Mix gently.

Pour the batter into a greased 175 mm. (7”) diameter thali. Shake the thali clockwise to spread it evenly

Place the thali in a steamer.

Steam in a steamer for 12 minutes or till the dhoklas are cooked.

Cut into square or diamond shaped equal pieces using a sharp knife.
