  1. To make strawberry jam, combine the strawberries and sugar in a broad non-stick pan, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 5 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  2. Allow it to cool completely, once cooled, add the lemon juice and mix well.
  3. Serve the strawberry jam immediately or store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
Handy tip:
  1. If your strawberry are not ripe enough you can lightly mash them and once cooked mash them again using potato masher.

How to make Strawberry Jam

 

    1. To prepare a strawberry jam at home, wipe the strawberries with a piece of damp kitchen paper. Wiping the strawberries instead of washing them ensures the fruit doesn’t absorb a lot of water – too much water and the jam won’t set easily. Pick strawberries that are red through and through. An underripe strawberry will be white or slightly greenish at the top. They are sour and the jam will require more refined sugar and might still taste a little sour.
    2. Remove the stems and discard them. When strawberries are not in season and you wish to make this jam then make use of frozen strawberries.
    3. Cut strawberries roughly and transfer to a deep bowl. You can also use other types of berries or stone fruit like blueberry, raspberry, apricots, mango, etc to make varieties of jams.
    4. Mash the strawberries using a pestle or grind them coarsely in a mixer jar.
    5. Transfer the mashed strawberries in a broad non-stick pan.
    6. Add sugar. Instead of sugar, you can make use of honey or powdered sugar. For a vegan version, you can use maple syrup to sweeten the strawberry jam. Add more sugar if the fruit you are using is not too sweet, especially ones like raspberries, apples or apricots.
    7. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 5 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
    8. Switch off the flame and allow it to cool completely.
    9. Once cooled, add the lemon juice. It gives a nice tang to the strawberry jam. Do not skip. If you want it zingier, also add some lemon zest. Lemon juice contains pectin naturally that helps the jam set up and also prevents the growth of bacteria.

I am not a huge fan of Jams, but this one i really loved it. It hardly takes any time to make this recipe and the results are marvellous. The jam just had like will taste a little sweet, but when you apple it on bread , you will realise the taste is just perfect.

Hi , I tried the recipe . It came out yummy. But after cooking it became like a slightly hard jelly . (I am afraid that I have overheated ) . Is there any remedy to bring back to normal ? Thanks

Hi Akila, yes you have overcooked the jam, go with the exact timings to make it. To rectify it, add little water, mix well till it loosens a bit and cook for 1 minute. Then cool it completely and store.
