  • Flours: Besan (gram flour), rice flour, and other flours are used to make various savory snacks.
  • Spices: Mild spices like cumin, coriander, and turmeric are used to enhance flavor.
  • Examples:

    • "Moong Dal Cheela" (pancakes made from mung bean flour)
    • Fruit salads and nut mixes

Jain Dry-Snacks

Makhana/ Lotus seeds are another light and healthy snack. You can roast them in an array of spices to make varieties of Jain snacks like the Masala Makhana, Herbed Makhanas or simple Roasted Makhana. Other dry-snacks which you can make are Corn Flakes Chivda, Murukku.

Tea-time is incomplete without crunchy snacks. Dry snacks are something you can make in bulk and store in air-tight container. The conventional method of deep-frying can be replaced with healthy cooking methods like baking. Sev, Ganthia, Fafda are almost similar because they are made with besan, just the shape differs. You can perk up the taste with the addition of vegetable puree or spices to make Masala Sev, Teekha Gathiya etc. This sev is even used to make a popular Jain subzi Rasawala Sev Tameta.

Jains totally avoid ingredients like onion, garlic, potato and root vegetables. But, don’t worry we have got delectable Jain starters like Raw Banana Crispies, Crunchy Raw Banana Cutlets that makes use of raw bananas instead of potatoes. The crispy outer covering and melt in the mouth inner texture is a delight for the taste buds.

Jain steamed snacks

The steamed dhokla is a popular Gujarati breakfast. They are not only healthy but also, tasty. You can make a wide range of dhoklas using different combinations of dals and vegetables. My favorite dhokla recipes are  moong dal dhokla  and Mag Ni Dal Na Dhokla. They taste amazing with spicy coriander chutney and sweet imli chutney. Also, boiled sweet corn tossed in Indian spices to make the Masala Corn is a quick and filling snack.

In accordance with Jain dietary restrictions, these snacks exclude root vegetables like potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, and radishes.
