Ingredients

For The Sambhar Masala
2 tsp oil
1 tbsp coriander (dhania) powder
1 tbsp chana dal (split bengal gram)
red chilli to taste
2 tbsp grated coconut
1 1/2 tbsp fenugreek (methi) seeds
a pinch asafoetida (hing)
3 garlic (lehsun) cloves

Other Ingredients
1/4 kg beetroot , chopped and boiled
1 cup toovar (arhar) dal , cooked
Method

For the masala

  1. Heat the oil in a kadhai, add all the ingredients gradullay and saute on a medium flame, till they turn golden brown in colour. Cool slightly and blend in a mixer to a smooth powder.
  2. Keep aside.

How to proceed

  1. Put the tamarind juice to boil in a deep vessel.
  2. Add the prepared masala powder, mix well and bring to a boil.
  3. Add the beetroot and toovar dal to this.
  4. Blend this in a mixer till smooth.
  5. Serve hot.

Nice recipe. But was just wandering that cna the beetroot be grated instead of cutting them in cubes? I personally feel that the textures might be better with grated ones. However, the recipe is good and unusual.
