Poha Ladoo: A Beloved Indian Sweet

Poha Ladoo, also known as Aval Laddu, is a popular, festive sweet deeply rooted in Indian culinary traditions, especially in the southern states. This simple yet nourishing sweet is prepared by roasting and grinding flattened rice (poha) and mixing it with a binding agent and flavorings.

Popularity Across South India

The ladoo is a customary treat in several South Indian regions:

  • Tamil Nadu: Here, it’s known as Aval Laddu and is a classic offering during festivals like Krishna Jayanthi.
  • Karnataka: Called Avalakki Unde or Poha Laddu, the recipe typically includes beaten rice, sugar, desiccated coconut, and ghee.
  • Kerala: Also referred to as Aval Laddu, this version is commonly made using thick poha, jaggery, cashews, raisins, milk, and ghee.

Significance in Festivals

Poha Ladoo is commonly prepared for major Indian celebrations:

  • Krishna Jayanthi: This is a significant festival for the ladoo, as it is traditionally made and offered to Lord Krishna.
  • Diwali: Some regions include Poha Ladoo as a sweet treat during this major festival of lights.
  • Other Festivals: The sweet is also occasionally prepared during observances like Shivratri and Naga Panchami in various parts of the country.

Core Recipe Ingredients

While the specific recipe for Poha Ladoo may vary across regions, the basic cooking method involves roasting flattened rice (poha) and then combining it with a sweetener like jaggery or sugar, and rich ingredients like ghee. Other common additions to enhance flavor and texture include nuts and coconut.

For those of you who love traditional Indian mithai but do not have time to make elaborate ones, this Poha Ladoo is a dream come true.

It is exceptionally easy to prepare but tastes simply awesome, with the rich and rustic flavours of jaggery and melted ghee. Dry roast the poha slowly and carefully till the raw smell goes. This will give you a good taste and aroma too.

If you find it difficult to shape the ladoos, you can add a little more melted ghee. You can have this ladoo as a dessertor snack . You can even pack it in a snack box to enjoy at school or at work.
