South Indian style French bean poriyal is a dry steamed dish were the green beans are beautifully cooked until tender with spices like mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, red chilies and later finished with some curry leaves and freshly grated coconut.

French beans sabzi is delicious, healthy side dish that makes a great side dish in your everyday meal. Poriyals are easy and quick to make, also goes well in school/ office lunch and can be eaten with any meal.

Tips to make beans poriyal: 1. If you don’t have freshly grated coconut you can add desiccated coconut. 2. Instead of beans you use cabbage to make cabbage poriyal. 3. If you wish you can also add turmeric powder in the sabzi.

For beans poriyal
  1. To make beans poriyal, heat the oil in a kadhai and add the mustard seeds.
  2. When the seeds crackle, add urad dal, chana dal, pandi chili, green chillies, asafoetida, onions and sauté on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring continuously.
  3. Add the french beans, salt and ¼ cup of water, mix well and cover and cook on a medium flame for 8 to 10 minutes till they are cooked.
  4. Add the curry leaves, coconut, mix gently and cook for another 2 minutes.
  5. Serve beans poriyal hot.

    1. To make beans poriyal, heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a kadhai.
    2. Add 1 tsp mustard seeds.
    3. When the seeds crackle, add 1 tsp urad dal. 
    4. Add 1 tsp chana dal (split Bengal gram)
    5. Add 1 dry pandi chilli, broken into peices.
    6. Add 1 tsp finely chopped green chillies.
    7. Add ¼ tsp asafoetida.
    8. Add ¼ cup finely chopped onions.
    9. Sauté on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring continuously.
    10. Add 2 1/2 cup chopped french beans.
    11. Add salt to taste.
    12. Add ¼ cup of water.
    13. Mix well.
    14. Cover and cook on a medium flame for 8 to 10 minutes till they are cooked.
    15. Add 6 to 7 curry leaves.
    16. Add ¼ cup freshly grated coconut.
    17. Mix gently and cook for another 2 minutes. 
    18. Serve beans poriyal hot.
