This mildly-flavoured combination of rice with coriander and curds in the form of Curd Rice for Babies and Toddlers introduces your child to more ingredients and flavours.

The rice in the Curd Rice for Infants and Toddlers is cooked till mushy, to make it baby-friendly. For very young children, you can blend it coarsely in the mixer to make it smoother, but once your child is 1 year and above, you should stop blending it, so that the child gets used to chewing.

Curds made from cow’s milk is suggested in by most pediatricians as it is more easily digestible by kids. However it is best to consult your pediatrician, for the use of curd made from cow’s milk or buffalo’s milk.

Also salt has not been added in this recipe of Curd Rice for Kids. If your baby is below 1 year, try and avoid adding salt and if you have a toddler, add only small quantity of salt. Again consult your pediatrician for usage of salt too.

Ingredients

For Curd Rice For Babies and Toddlers
1 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
4 tbsp curd (dahi) , preferably made with cow’s
2 tbsp rice (chawal) , washed and drained
1/2 tsp ghee
1/4 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
Method

  1. To make curd rice for babies and toddlers, heat the ghee in a broad non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds.
  2. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida and rice and sauté on a medium flame for a minute.
  3. Add approx. 1 cup of water and mix well. Cover it with a lid and cook on a medium flame for 10 to 12 minutes or till the rice is overdone, all the water has been evaporated and it can be easily mashed, while stirring occasionally.
  4. Cool the rice slghtly, add the curds and coriander and coarsely blend it in a mixer.
  5. Serve the curd rice for babies and toddlersimmediately.

Notes for Curd Rice for Babies

  1. Curd Rice for Babies and Toddlers is a coarse semi-solid supplement for babies who are 9 to 10 months and above. 
  2. Begin with this rice recipe only once our baby is used to licking on smooth semi-solid foods like porridge and puree. 
  3. Salt has not been added to this recipes as it’s for babies below 1 year of age. If you are serving this to your little toddler (1 to 3 years), you can add small quantity of salt as per your pediatricians advice. 
  4. Add only a pinch of asafoetida. That’s for digestion. Excess can cause stomach upset in babies. 
  5. For choice of curd made with cow’s milk or buffalo’s milk, please consult your pediatrician. 

For Curd Rice for Babies and Toddlers

  1. For Curd Rice for Babies and Toddlers, first clean and wash the rice with enough water.  
  2. Drain the water well and discard it. Keep the washed rice aside.
  3. Next take a broad non-stick pan and add ½ tsp of ghee to it. Allow the ghee to heat. 
  4. Add cumin seeds to it and allow them to crackle. Cumin seeds aid digestion, so small amounts can be added to baby’s meals. You can also slightly crush it and add it while tempering. 
  5. For Curd Rice for Babies and Toddlers, first clean and wash the rice with enough water.  
  6. Quickly add the washed and drained rice. 
  7. Mix well using a ladle and sauté on a medium flame for 1 minute. 
  8. Add 1 cup of water and mix well using a ladle.
  9. Cover it with a lid and cook on a medium flame for 10 to 12 minutes or till the rice is overdone. Keep stirring the rice in between. 
  10. All the water should be evaporated and you should be able to mash the Curd Rice for Babies and Toddlers easily. Allow the rice to cool slightly.
  11. Transfer the cooked rice into a mixer jar. 
  12. Add curd to it. Prefer curd made with cow’s milk as that us more easily digestible than buffalo’s milk. For choice of milk and curd, always consult your pediatrician.
  13. Add chopped coriander to it as well. Ensure that the coriander is washed well and free of dirt before chopping. 
  14. Blend in a mixer till the mixture of Curd Rice for Babies and Toddlers is slightly coarse. You can begin with completely and finely blended mixture and then gradually make the mixture coarse as per your baby’s liking. 
  15. Serve the Curd Rice for Babies and Toddlers immediately.
