moong dal khichu recipe | Gujarati yellow moong dal khichu | Gujarati quick khichu snack |

Moong Dal Khichu Recipe is a unique and comforting Gujarati quick khichu snack that’s light on the stomach yet deeply satisfying. Unlike the traditional khichu made with rice flour, this variation uses yellow moong dal (split yellow gram) to create a rich, velvety texture and wholesome flavor. The recipe begins by soaking ½ cup of moong dal for an hour and then blending it into a smooth paste. This forms the base of the dish, which when cooked with fragrant spices, transforms into a warm and doughy delight that perfectly represents the heart of Gujarati home cooking.

This Gujarati Yellow Moong Dal Khichu stands out for its simplicity and nutrition. Moong dal is known for being high in protein, fiber, and essential vitamins, making this snack both filling and healthy. A touch of green chillies, cumin seeds (jeera), and asafoetida (hing) adds gentle spice and aroma, while a pinch of baking soda ensures the khichu stays soft and fluffy. The combination of these ingredients makes it not only easy to digest but also a great choice for those looking for a light meal or evening snack.

To prepare this moong dal khichu, water is heated with green chillies, cumin seeds, asafoetida, baking soda, and salt, creating a flavorful base. The moong dal paste is then stirred in and cooked until it starts leaving the sides of the pan. The key is to use a rolling pin or wooden spatula to mix continuously, ensuring a smooth, lump-free consistency. The end result is a soft, doughy mixture that’s ready to be served piping hot.

Serving this Gujarati khichu is an experience in itself. A drizzle of oil enhances its richness, while a generous sprinkle of koro sambhar — a spicy, dry Gujarati masala — elevates its flavor with a tangy, zesty touch. The contrast of the smooth, mild khichu with the bold taste of koro sambhar makes it absolutely irresistible. For the best experience, enjoy it immediately after cooking, as khichu tends to firm up when it cools.

Beyond its delicious taste, Moong Dal Khichu carries nostalgic value in many Gujarati households. It’s often enjoyed during rainy days or as an evening comfort snack, loved by all generations. Its warm, dough-like texture and simple, earthy flavor remind many of traditional village cooking — food that soothes both hunger and the heart. The recipe’s balance of taste, nutrition, and texture makes it one of Gujarat’s hidden culinary gems.

So, if you’re looking for something wholesome yet indulgent, try this Gujarati Moong Dal Khichu Recipe. It’s a brilliant twist on a classic dish, bringing together the goodness of yellow moong dal, aromatic spices, and the unmistakable flavor of koro sambhar. Serve it hot, drizzle with a bit of oil, and savor the comforting, homely taste of Gujarat in every bite.

Didn?t turn out very good. Doesn?t taste as good as rice khichu. Was liquidy and stayed like that in spite of stirring for half an hour.

I had tried the bajra khichu and rice khichu after following your recipes and moong dal khichu tastes equally delicious and easy to make too. Reminds me of home when I am far away studying from home.
