  1. To make turmeric with black pepper for anti-inflammation, combine the turmeric powder, black pepper powder and ghee in a small plate and mix well.

Why the Turmeric with Black Pepper Combo?

  1. Turmeric powder is a spice known for its health benefits since ages in Ayurveda. It’s the compound ‘curcumin’ in turmeric which possess the so-called nutritional attributes. However curcumin is poorly absorbed in the body as it is easily metabolized. 
  2. Thus its combination with black pepper came into limelight. Freshly ground black pepper contains a compound viz. ‘piperine’ which inhibits the metabolism of curcumin and thus makes more of curcumin available to the body. Thus piperine increases the amount of curcumin being absorbed in the body too. 
  3. What more? You also need to add a dose of fat in this combo, as curcumin is fat-soluble and is absorbed the most in presence of a fat like ghee or coconut oil or olive oil.

Ratio of Turmeric Powder to Black Pepper

  1. There is no specific ratio of turmeric powder to black pepper to be consumed in reality. It is said that the average content of curcumin in turmeric ranges from 4-7% and average content of piperine in black pepper ranges from 2-7%. A ratio of 100:1 of curcumin to piperine is recommended. However this quantity seems to be very small. Since it is difficult to get perfect ratios of these bioactive compounds, to make it simpler it is said that even 1/20th of pepper powder is enough to increase the bioavailability of curcumin from turmeric powder. This means that 1 tsp of turmeric powder (2 g) can be combined with 1/8th tsp of freshly ground black pepper powder (250 mg).

I do love what it does for my well being. I somehow stopped without realizing and don’t know how that happened because I love the way it helped with inflammation and energy. This morning I think the 1/8 tsp of tumeric was more than it should have been. Due to a few lumps within the measurement. My question is how much does this matter?

However look out for any allergy or upset stomach. If you have any side effect, stop having it and consult your doctor. It is best to have turmeric within the given limits only.

I have been taking turmeric and ground pepper in water or kombucha. No oil. Will it still benefit me if I mix with water. Don''t know if I can handle the oil paste mixture. But truly glad I saw this post. Thank you. I''m 80 years old. Fairly healthy except for screwed up low thyroid.

I mix it all together turmeric ginger black pepper with coconut oil. It does go a little hard. This does not worry me. I take it every morning 1 teaspoon have been doing this for about 5 years. Are you saying it does not work as well by mixing a lot together regards Betty

Thanks for the recipe. If I am using 5 gram of turmeric, 1/10 teaspoonful of black pepper is kinda too little to blend really smooth. Will the black pepper loose its active ingredient if I ground a weeks supply for everyday use instead of grinding the little quantity needed everyday?

Hello and thank you. Can I spread the mix into a bread toast and eat it or it has to be taken alone? I am currently is biologic med for AS but looking for alternatives that are natural to maybe hopefully come off meds. Thanks again.
