As I write this it’s raining outside, and the city is completely transformed. The heat of the summer is past and it’s certainly a more comfortable time of year. I trust you are all enjoying the monsoon too, revelling in the changes it brings to the surroundings.
The best part of the season for me is meeting up with friends over a cup of hot chai and some interesting snacks. While pakodas are the usual monsoon favourite, I tend to stay away from fried food. Instead I’ve worked on appetising snacks that require no frying, such as Makai Dhoklas and Poha Khichu. Try them out the next time you’re having friends over for a cosy chat! I travelled out of the country recently and was amazed at how seriously they take breakfast in other countries. While most of us here tend to skip this all-important meal, grabbing a sandwich or slice of toast on the run, a lavish breakfast is not unusual in the West. The traditional combo in this issue is also perfect for this weather. Gujarati khichidi and the unusual dapka kadhi, which is wholesome, nourishing and eaten hot, is ideal for a wet day. The fabulous looking Chocolate Chiffon Cake featured inside is quite simple to create, and the results are absolutely amazing!
Stay out of the rain, and remember to eat healthy and hygienic food through the wet months!
