What is sugarcane, ganna?


Sugarcane is the major source of sugar around the world. It supplies 62% of the world sugar requirements while the remaining 38% are produced as local and specialized products from the sap of the maple tree, sorghum and from date and palm trees. By products can be used to produce solvents, plastics, plasticizers, fiberboards, building materials, surfactants, additives and fuel. Sugarcane is a member of the grass family.
Sugarcane looks rather like bamboo cane, and it is within the cane that the sucrose is stored. In the right climate sugarcane will grow in 12 months and, when cut, sugarcane will re-grow in another 12 months, provided the roots are undisturbed.
Sugarcane was a very important part of the primitive diet. Chewing the peeled, raw cane was one way that primitive peoples obtained the goodness from sugar cane.

You can buy peeled or unpeeled sugarcane. It is available in whole form as well as peeled and chopped form. Look for firm, juicy and tender cane, easy to chew. Avoid if its too hard or damaged.

How to store sugarcane, ganna


Whole sugarcane can be kept at room temperature for a week. But once peeled and chopped, wrap it in a plastic bag and store it in the refrigerator, will last for a week.
