Ingredients


To Be Ground Into A Paste
1 onion
6 green chillies
25 mm (1") piece of ginger (adrak)
2 cardamoms (elaichi)
1 tsp lemon juice
3 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
6 cloves garlic (lehsun)

Other Ingredients
1 1/2 cups rice (chawal)
1 1/8 cups vaal (field beans/ butter beans)
1 1/2 cups gujarati kadhi
36 mm (11/2") piece cinnamon (dalchini)
3 cloves (laung / lavang)
2 bayleaves (tejpatta)
3 tbsp ghee
salt to taste

Method
  1. Heat the ghee and fry the cinnamon, cloves and bay leaves for a few seconds.
  2. Add the paste and fry for 2 minutes.
  3. Add the rice and beans and cook for 2 minutes
  4. Add 4 teacups of hot water and salt and pour the mixture into an earthen pot (or a big bowl).
  5. Cover and cook in a hot oven at 200 degree c (400 degree f) for 20 minutes.
  6. When the rice is cooked, pour the kadhi over it.
  7. Cover and bake again at 200 degree c (400 degree f) for 5 minutes.
  8. Serve hot.
