This dal is traditionally referred to as makhni dal, since it contains a lot of butter. Our version is equally creamy but derives this virtue from low fat yoghurt instead.

Ingredients


For The Dal
3/4 cup urad dal (split black lentils)
2 onions , grated
2 tomatoes , grated
1 cup low fat curds (dahi) , beaten
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
2 tsp coriander-cumin seeds (dhania-jeera) powder
1 tsp chilli powder
salt to taste

To Be Ground Into A Paste.
12 ginger (adrak)
2 green chillies
2 to 3 clove of garlic (lehsun)

For The Garnish
2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)

Method
  1. Clean, wash and soak the urad dal for 2 to 3 hours. Drain and set aside.
  2. Mix the black gram dal and onions with 2 teacups of water and cook in a pressure cooker until soft. Mash slightly.
  3. Add the tomatoes, turmeric powder, paste, coriander-cumin seeds powder, chilli powder and salt. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes or until the dal thickens.
  4. Add the yoghurt and sprinkle coriander on top.
  5. Serve hot.
