Karnataka is known for its great hospitality, filter coffee and bisi bele bath! rice, dal and a whole lot of veggies-carrots, capsicum, french beans, potatoes- spiked with tamarind and masala go into the cooking pot to make this out-of-the-world dish!

Ingredients

Method
  1. Boil the vegetables and keep aside.
  2. Boil 5 cups of water in a heavy-bottomed pan, add the oil, turmeric powder, toovar dal and salt and cook for 5 to 6 minutes.
  3. Add the rice, cover and cook over medium flame for 20 minutes, till the rice and dal are cooked.

For the powdered masala

  1. Heat the oil and roast all the ingredients except the coconut, blend in a blender to a fine powder.
  2. Powder the coconut separately.

How to proceed

  1. When the rice and dal is cooked, add the boiled vegetables, powdered masala, curry leaves, tamarind pulp, salt and 2 cups of water, mix gently and cook on a slow flame for further 5 minutes.
